Bees play a fundamental role in the natural world, their protection is essential to guarantee the development of flowers and plants. Did you know that without bees we wouldn't have fruit or vegetables? A big problem for our lunches but above all for the whole natural ecosystem. Follow us to discover the role and some curiosities about our indispensable friends and let's celebrate the world day of bees.

The role of bees

The role of bees in our ecosystem is of fundamental importance as they are responsible for pollination. In fact, thanks to their buzzing from flower to flower, they allow the pollen to meet the female gamete at the end of the flower. The result? The birth and growth of the fruit.

5 curiosities about bees

There are some curiosities about bees that very few know. According to many scholars, including Albert Einstein, they are among the most important living beings for the human being. In fact, 90% of the crops that feed humanity are pollinated by this precious flying insect. Are you ready? Let's find out five curiosities about bees.

1. They can recognize our face and that of other bees

Although the bee brain has fewer than a million brain cells, these small insects can recognize bees belonging to their own hive. This particular ability allows them to recognize human faces too, in fact their process of memorizing faces and shapes is very similar to man. Maybe a bee could fall in love with us at first sight.

2. They are individualistic insects

Inside the hive, our little bees are collaborative and obedient, however outside the hive they show their individualistic personality. In fact, each bee has a different way of reacting to the dangers, it usually changes among the different specimens, just as if each one had his own personality. Just like for the human being, there are the bravest and the most "sissy" types.

3. They know how to count

Bees are infallible accountants. In fact, according to some tests, according to the same principle that allows them to remember faces, they can also memorize shapes and quantities and therefore they can count. But what do our little friends count? Basically animals and food.

4. Bee venom has therapeutic properties

The sting of a bee isn’t so good isn't it? But there is a small consolation, in fact, their poison contains a substance called apitoxin that can be used to fight bone diseases and breathing difficulties. Good news don't you think?

5. They can self-medicate

Despite their individualistic nature, our friends manage to act collaboratively when their hive is threatened. For example, when bacteria or fungi attack their home, bees are able to cope with the emergency through propolis, a substance transported by worker bees, which has antibiotic properties thanks to its origin from the resin of the trees. In this way, they seem to know how to act against the spread of epidemics within their own society.
