Elegant, sophisticated and ... pink: Pink Panther, a fashion icon for over 55 years

The Pink Panther created in 1963 by Isadore “Friz” Freleng, as a tall and slender panther imbued with sense of style and
sophistication. The story behind the birth of this character is quite curious: the director Blake Edwards, doing the
finishing touches to his comedy entitled "The Pink Panther", starring Peter Sellers, decided to open the film with an animated sequence during the scroll of the front credits.
Freleng and the other animators wanted to create a character that embodies some of the characteristics of the most popular actors of the ‘60s: the elegance of Cary Grant, the impertinence of James Dean and there being no dialogue for the opening scene, the character was also given the mimicry of Buster Keaton.

But what made The Pink Panther become a real icon were his suave movements, to the unforgetting theme song written by Henry Mancini. The theme song achieved such success that the Time Magazine, in the issue
of the 27 th of April 1964, expressed itself with these words: "The animations of the titles are better than the movie". A fine and easy-to-listen jazz tune, the song continues to be globally popular nearly 60 years later. The cartoon, thanks again to the musical theme, immediately became popular and appreciated. The first short, “The Pink Phink”, won an Academy Award. Another
successful Pink Panther short films would follow over time. The stories unfold in a stylized world, where reality is represented with few and essential lines. The Pink Panther performs actions outside the ordinary logic, able to entertain adults and children. The recurring victim in his stories is a funny and short little man, whose half of the body is made up of a huge nose and small moustache: the caricature of Inspector Clouseau.
The success of the Pink Panther over the years has also continued on the big screen: since 1963, eight sequels and two remakes were made, in 2006 and 2009, starring the actor Steve Martin and the star Beyoncé.

Pink Panther’s style has reached well beyond the screen, with the character becoming a true representation of fashion and style for multiple generations. The icon has more than 13 million subscribers on YouTube.
